Hamac was one of three Somali pirates killed in the Gulf of Aden in April 2009 after seizing control of the MV Maersk Alabama and holding Captain Richard Phillips for ransom in a lifeboat. Not long after the group's leader, Abduwali Muse, was lured off the lifeboat, Hamac and the other two pirates were gunned down by Navy SEALs, and Phillips was rescued. Muse was arrested and charged in the United States. Hamac's first name isn't known. Non-verifiable sources online claim that Hamac's mother (who lives in Somalia) revealed that her son's age was 29. However, this has yet to be confirmed.

It's possible, but not likely, that Somali pirate Adan Bilal from Captain Phillips (2013) is based on him. This is best backed up by the fact that Hamac appears barefoot in one of the photos taken by crew member Shane Murphy on Maersk Alabama just prior to taking Phillips and fleeing in the lifeboat; despite Hamac being barefoot, there is no evidence to suggest that any of the three pirates that accompanied Muse on his mission to hijack the Maersk had cut their feet on glass, like in the film. Adan Bilal is portrayed by Somali-American actor Barkhad Abdirahman.
